Why yes, there are eco-friendly air conditioning systems on the market today and more are expected to be introduced in the future. The most widely used ones at this time are energy efficient air conditioners that use natural refrigerants like Puron®. Puron® is a product that is used in a variety of energy efficient, Bryant air conditioning systems. It differs greatly from chlorofluorocarbons, which are considered harmful to our natural environment. The difference is attributed to a finely honed mixture of R-125 (pentafluoroethane) and R-32 (difluoromethane).
At this juncture, you’re probably thinking, “Rick, what the heck are pentafluoroethane and difluoromethane?” Excellent question! Plainly speaking, they perform the same function in an air conditioning system as chlorofluorocarbons minus the negative impact on our earth’s ozone levels. If you want to get more technical about it, both substances are classified as gases. One is flammable (difluoromethane) and the other is a fire suppressant (pentafluoroethane). That’s why they tend to be paired together in eco-friendly, refrigerant mixtures.
And just in case you’re wondering, some of the models that contain the green form of refrigerant are Bryant’s Evolution®, Preferred Series and Legacy Lines. That brings us to the other key element that makes certain air conditioning systems eco-friendly, energy efficiency.
The energy efficiency of modern air conditioning systems is often measured using three different ratings. They are known as SEER, EER and Energy Star® ratings. All of the Bryant air condition systems that we mentioned previously have SEER and EER ratings. Many also have Energy Star® ratings. Out of the three, the air conditioning system with the highest SEER and EER ratings is the Evolution®.
